A MATHEMATICS PROFESSOR'S PERSPECTIVE
SPEAKER
Our speaker this year is Dr. Russell Howell. He will be presenting two lectures titled, "Is Faith Required for Mathematics? Is Mathematics Required for Faith?" and "C.S. Lewis, Beauty, and Mathematics as Evidence for a Creator" as well as hosting a time of Q & A.
Dr. Russell Howell is Kathleen Smith Chair of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at Westmont College. He has had stints at Calvin University (1999), University of Maryland (2000), Oxford University (Wolfson College, 2006), and the US Air Force Academy (2015). He does his research in Complex Analysis, and has published in standard mathematics journals as well as sources usually targeted to the humanities: Novum Testamentum, Eerdmans, and InterVarsity Press. He was the first installed 'Brabenec Lecturer' for the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences, and was an invited speaker in Istanbul for the Third International Conference on Science, Philosophy, and Religion (2023).
SCHEDULE
The first lecture of the seminar will begin at 9am followed by a time of coffee and refreshments. The second lecture will begin at 10:10am followed by a time of Q&A. Here is the tentative schedule:
